Twitter tests a new way of reporting harmful tweets 2022

Twitter tests has started testing a simple process for users to report harmful tweets, in which the users describe what they’re seeing, the company said Tuesday.

It is well known that people on Twitter will fight over anything – it is the premier destination for high-speed, low-information opinions slinging on the web.

Twitter Tests has been working on ways to reduce the toxicity of its platform, and its latest experiment aims to prepare people before they wade into heated debates on the platform. Those using Twitter’s iOS and Android apps may see the test prompts.

According to Twitter, the goal is to alert people before they join discussions that are “heated or intense,” which could be anything from life-threatening health misinformation to recipes for guacamole. Twitter aims to encourage “healthy conversations” on its platform, as it has stated before.

There’s a warning on the test labels that “conversations of this nature can get heated.” To participate, you’ll need to click through a prompt that encourages users to be factual, open to diverse perspectives, and let them know they’re all human.

According to the company, the prompt may be displayed based on the tweet topic and the relationship between the tweet author and the person who responded.

The Twitter tests will begin with a small group of Twitter users in the US amid continued criticism that Twitter isn’t doing enough to reduce the amount of abusive or hateful content on its platform. Twitter plans to make the testing available to a wider audience in 2022.

Twitter also announced an update to its privacy policy in November that bans the sharing of photos and videos of private individuals without their consent. If the site determines the content has been shared “to harass, intimidate, or to use fear to silence them,” then it will be removed.

The Twitter Tests has previously experimented with other behavior-shaping prompts, such as pop-ups that discourage users from replying in hate or harassment.

Targeted pop-ups are clearly a tool that can slow some rapid-fire toxic social media patterns, but given how many people are being monsters online, we’re going to need a number of different methods.
