Twitter confirms that DM was accessed in a major hack last week

Twitter revealed more information about the main hacking activity involving the Bitcoin scam, which targeted dozens of well-known accounts on its service on Wednesday, July 15.

The company said in a tweet on Wednesday, July 22, that following a complete review of all of the impacted  Twitter accounts, it believes that “for up to 36 of the 130 targeted accounts, the attackers accessed the DM [direct message] inbox, including 1 elected official in the Netherlands.” Twitter did not name the elected official.

Although it refused to provide specific information on the other 35 accounts that might have access to the DM, it added that so far, there is no evidence that hackers have accessed the DM of any other former or current elected officials.


In other words, Barack Obama and Joe Biden (if using the DM function) can breathe a sigh of relief.

As for Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Kanye West, and others, these people are some other high-profile individuals who have been hacked. At this stage, The information could have been accessed.

The scam involved a fake tweet encouraging believers to send payment to a Bitcoin wallet. This scam also achieved some success because data on Blockchain.com showed that through 392 transactions, more than $115,000 was sent to the Bitcoin wallet published in the message.


After Twitter discovered the attack last week, it immediately locked the affected accounts and deleted the fake tweets. The company stated that it has been “a victim of coordinated social engineering attacks launched by someone who successfully used internal systems and tools to target certain of our employees.”

Twitter said it will continue to communicate directly with account holders affected by the hacker. The FBI is also investigating the incident.
