Tumblr iOS app now has a sensitive content filter

Tumblr is adding a Sensitive Content toggle to its iOS app in an effort to stay compliant with App Store rules. It blocks search results with sensitive tags, hides blogs with explicit tags, and keeps posts with sensitive tags out of recommendations.

By turning off the toggle, users will be able to search for tags that might contain posts that are sensitive in nature and find recommendations that contain sensitive or suggestive content.

You will also be able to tap into a blog that has been marked as explicit by turning off the setting. You will still not be able to view posts that have been marked as explicit.

There is some confusion over how Tumblr defines “explicit” in this context. Following Apple’s temporary removal of the app from the App Store in December 2018, Tumblr banned porn and realistic depictions of human genitalia.

According to Tumblr, those using the latest iOS app will be able to use the sensitive content setting. Right now, users can disable the toggle only through their settings on the Tumblr website.

Once the iOS app has been relaunched after they quit and reopen it, they can access sensitive content.

“These latest updates give users more control over their experience on the iOS app,” Tumblr wrote in a blog post. “While providing an excellent experience for our community is our top priority, we also must comply with Apple’s App Store guidelines and our own policies.”

To comply with App Store rules, Tumblr blocked search terms with potentially sensitive content in its iOS app last month.

Users of iOS should be able to toggle sensitive content on and off, though it will still be less open than Android or the web.
