Using a similar folding form factor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold devices, Honor has just announced the Honor Magic V, its first foldable smartphone. The device features a large internal folding display and a small external display that can be used when folded.
A 256GB model of the foldable will cost you a starting price of *9,999 (about $1,569) in China today. This will be available to the general public on January 18th.
Magic V’s primary feature is its internal folding screen with an aspect ratio of 10:9 and a resolution of 2272 x 1984. Its refresh rate is 90Hz and its resolution is 2272 x 1984.
There are 7.5 inches of internal screen on the Samsung Z Fold 3, which has a resolution of 2208 x 1768. It’s like using two 21:9 screens side by side on the Magic V’s internal screen, Honor claims.
Samsung’s Z Fold 3 has an external screen that is 6.2 inches larger and has a resolution of 2560 x 1080, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 21:9 aspect ratio.
The Magic V’s external display is a little larger at 6.45 inches (compared to 6.2 for Samsung). According to Honor, this will make the device more useful when it’s not being unfolded.
Using the Magic V, when folded it measures 72.7mm wide, 14.3mm thick, and 160.4mm tall, while unfolded it measures 141.1mm wide and is 6.7mm thick. In terms of overall width, it’s slightly wider than Samsung’s Z Fold, but slightly thinner when folded.
It is, however, slightly heavier. Orange, silver, and black are the three colors available, and Honor CEO George Zhao says 200,000 folds and unfolds should be no problem.
The Magic V is powered by Qualcomm’s newest chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, paired with either 256GB or 512GB of storage. This phone has a 4,750mAh battery that is charged at up to 66W, giving it a 50 percent charge in 15 minutes.
The device runs Honor’s Magic UI 6.0 software on top of Android 12. Honor says this allows multiple app windows to be displayed simultaneously.
The foldable Honor phone comes with three 50-megapixel cameras on its back, including a main sensor, an ultrawide sensor, and a third sensor that the company calls a “spectrum enhanced camera.” We reached out to Honor for more information on this third camera.
Two 42-megapixel selfie cameras are built into the Magic V, one in the outer display and one in the inner folding screen.
The company joins an increasing number of other companies that have either announced or begun selling foldable smartphones.
Earlier this year, Oppo released its Find N, while Xiaomi and Huawei, Honor’s former parent company, also released foldable smartphones. The Magic V may see a global release at some point. We’ve asked Honor about it.
