Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, detailed all the new features, as well as the speed and range, of the Model S Plaid at an event last night. Several journalists were also shown how it feels to go from 0 to 60 MPH in less than 2 seconds in person.
Musk said the Model S Plaid offers not only quick performance, but the same results time after time, thanks to a heat pump and radiator that are twice as big. Musk said that there will actually be back-to-back 0-to-60s going on the track, just hauling asses. The car can operate in this manner repeatedly without getting winded.”
Aside from that, Tesla also claims its new heat pump will boost range by 30 percent in cold weather and keep heating costs low by 50 percent. According to Musk, there will be little degradation in cold weather.
Additionally, he emphasized the performance specs and features including a 0-60MPH time of 1.99 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 9.23 seconds and a top speed of 200MPH. These features are made possible by the engine with 1,020 peak horsepower.
This vehicle offers 390 miles of EPA range and 187 miles of additional range in 15 minutes thanks to its quicker charging system.
What is the purpose of such extreme speed? Musk explained, “We have to prove that electric cars are the best cars, hands down.” “We have to understand that sustainable energy cars can be the safest cars, the fastest cars, the coolest cars in every way.”
Besides the 17-inch horizontal touchscreen, the Model S Plaid also features a digital instrument panel behind the steering wheel. Musk described the previous Model S seat as “not amazing,” adding that passengers will also receive a third screen behind the center console.
There are also dual inductive chargers on the back and front, as well as a 36-watt USB-C power bank that can charge phones, tablets, or laptops. Moreover, it comes with a powerful new processor that allows AAA games to run at 60 frames per second on those screens.
The steering wheel is also yoke-style, and the drive modes are not controlled physically. However, it will automatically adjust between parking, reversing, and By A forward button by default with a manual option is selected. Musk said that human error accounts for the majority of input errors.
Model S plaids were delivered in the first 25 units at the event, Tesla has promised “several hundred per week very soon” and is planning up to 1,000 vehicles per week by next year. Tesla increased the price by $10,000 yesterday, so it now starts at $130,000.
