PSP Games – After a public outcry from fans and retro enthusiasts, Sony decided to keep the PS3 and Vita digital storefronts open. Sony announced instead that it would only continue selling digital PS games.
It was believed by all. PS games will continue to be sold through the PS3 and Vita consoles’ stores, according to a notice recently posted on the PlayStation UK website.
PlayStation and Vita stores were shut down in March, and the ability to purchase PS games was removed from both storefronts. Sony received widespread criticism for the move.
PS3 and Vita will continue to be the platforms for PSP games
The criticism prompted the company to change course. As planned, the PSP store will close on July 2nd as planned, but the PS3 store and Vita store will remain open.
After the announcement, many fans expressed concern over the upcoming discontinuation of many digital-only games. As it turns out, Eurogamer put together a list of classic games at risk. Meanwhile, developers are still working on downloads for those systems in 2021.
A drastic reversal of the company’s decision in April resulted from the company’s desire to save its PS3 and Vita stores. In a statement, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan acknowledged “there is no question that this was a wrong choice”.
When this was announced, many people took that to mean the PSP games would no longer be sold through the Vita and PS3 stores. As a result of the change, VGC has identified 35 digital-only PSP titles that will be lost for good. However, PlayStation UK’s discontinued apps, features, and services “important notice” page says something different.
Sony updated the PSP store three more times since it clarified things, including removing search capabilities and the ability to download DLC on July 6th:
What does this mean for you?
You were still able to perform searches on the PlayStation®Store and make in-game purchases when the PlayStation®Store for PlayStation®Portable (PSP) closed in 2016. The ability to make purchases or search in-game will be removed on July 6th, 2021.
What about the content you have already purchased for your PSP?
There will still be the option of downloading content that you have previously purchased for your PSP. You can access the content you previously purchased for your PSP through the Download List.
The PlayStation 3 store and PlayStation Vita store are now offering PSP content? How do you feel about this?
PSP content that is available on the PS3 and PS Vita stores will still be available for purchase and play. In-game purchases for PSP content will not be available any more.
An update posted on the gaming forum ResetEra earlier today noted that although users will not be able to search for PSP games on the PSP or make in-game purchases, they can still purchase and download games. This announcement states that PSP content can still be purchased and played on the PS3 and PS Vita. However, you won’t be able to purchase PSP content from the in-game store any longer.”
Sony’s consoles sometimes have a bit more complexity to playing older games than Microsoft’s, which uses backwards compatibility as a major selling point for the Xbox Series X. You can play almost any Playstation 4 game on the Playstation 5, but to play Playstation 3 or Playstation 2 games, you must buy Playstation Now subscriptions, or buy the remastered games outright.
You’ll still be able to play and purchase PSP content that is available on the PS3 store and PSP store,” PlayStation says on its support page. “Unfortunately, you will no longer be able to purchase PSP content through the in-game store.”
