It’s no secret that AirPods dominates the wireless headset market with its comfortable design and easy-to-use charging case. However, although they do work for Android phones, Apple’s primary design consideration was compatibility with the iPhone.

Its competitors have been trying to replicate the success of this headset while avoiding any comparisons, they have introduced Android-based alternatives and adopted an in-ear design. But unlike other companies, Huawei doesn’t mind being compared to Apple. The company acknowledged that its latest product, the Huawei FreeBuds 3, was positioned as a direct competitor to Apple AirPods, and it turned out that its quality was impressive.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 Design

The design of Huawei’s 3rd generation wireless headphones is based on last year’s FreeBuds 2 Pro, maintaining an open style, but the stems on FreeBuds are now thinner. The shape of each earbud has also been slightly modified to improve comfort.

Huawei extended them slightly and implemented a subtle curve to make it fit the curve of the ear. Because of this, Huawei FreeBuds 3 is generally more comfortable to use than industry-standard AirPods.

Another benefit of these design changes is to ensure that they do not fall out of the user’s ears. I personally have never encountered any problems when using AirPods, but FreeBuds 3 feels safer, especially during exercise.

The biggest difference of Huawei headset is its matching charging case. It is very compact, easy to put into your pocket, and stands out from the competition because of its round shape. In terms of features, it has a USB-C port on the bottom and a small button on the right, but the black version is easy to miss.

There is also a small LED light next to the USB-C port, which can display the power of the case, and a separate LED inside, which can display the battery status of the Huawei FreeBuds 3. When the battery power is above 60%, it will flash green; when the battery is 60%-20%, it will flash yellow; when the battery is less than 20%, it will flash red.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 Sound quality

The audio experience of FreeBuds 3 is good, but there is certainly nothing to praise. Huawei designed them as multifunctional products, which is very obvious when listening to music or any other media.

If you are looking for superior sound quality, you may not be surprised to hear that these headphones are not for you. But compared to Apple’s other alternatives, they perform quite well. Huawei FreeBuds 3 has more bass and richer overall sound, although these improvements come at the cost of increased volume.

Another factor that makes Huawei headphones stand out from similar pricing options is the existence of active noise reduction technology. Huawei said that this sound is most pronounced during a call. If you like, you can activate the active noise cancellation function by double-clicking the left ear in the Huawei artificial intelligence life app for Android, but you can also switch to the right ear. This can also be used to adjust features to your personal preferences, but iPhone users can’t because there isn’t an identical application.

Finally, the microphone is usually an overlooked part of the headset, but Huawei’s design is worth mentioning. It has a hidden microphone design and the effect is impressive. The voice sounds very clear when talking on the phone, and sending audio through WhatsApp is no problem at all.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 Connectivity

Huawei has made good use of its chip maker subsidiary to create a proprietary wearable chip that is unique in FreeBuds 3. The chip, called Kirin A1, ensures that you can pair quickly and easily with any device, but the benefits of using a Huawei phone are most obvious.

If your phone is a Huawei phone, put the headset next to your phone and open the charging case. Soon after, a pop-up window will appear on the screen, and a quick click will pair you up, allowing you to start using FreeBuds 3 immediately.

If you are using another Android smartphone or iPhone, you need to turn on the Bluetooth function in the settings application and press the pairing button of the charging case. Once FreeBuds appears, click the name and start listening, the whole process will be very simple.

The only real downside of using FreeBuds 3 on non-Huawei phones is that there is no automatic pause and play function. When you temporarily take them out of your ears, it will stop the music immediately, but once you wear them again, your media will restart.

As mentioned earlier, there is currently no Huawei artificial intelligence life application for iOS, which means that iOS users will face additional disadvantages, such as users not being able to check the battery level when using headsets and cases. Nevertheless, the average cost of FreeBuds 3 will still appear in the widget menu of the operating system.

On the topic of network connectivity, the company’s efforts to reduce game latency are also worth mentioning. Thanks to the Kirin A1 chip, your device can communicate with each earbud separately, instead of being connected to the main earbud.

When playing games, you can notice that FreeBuds 3 connected to Huawei mobile phones has a small improvement over AirPods, and the game sounds and sound effects have different changes. But when switching to the iPhone, such improvements disappeared.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 Battery life and charging

In terms of battery life, Huawei officially stated that the Huawei FreeBuds 3 can be used for 4 hours after a single charge. The included charging case has enough power to charge four more times, which means you can use it for almost 24 hours without charging. But if you are really looking for a power outlet, the waiting time will be significantly shorter than the industry standard, thanks to Huawei’s technology.

huawei freebuds 3 Smart Charging

It takes about an hour to fully charge via a USB-C cable. For such a small device, this may sound quite a long time, but Apple ’s AirPods charging case takes about twice as long to charge, and Huawei ’s achievements in this comparison are impressive.

If you are not interested in cables, FreeBuds 3 will help you solve this problem, because unlike the competition, it can support wireless chargers for free. And the operation is very simple, you only need to put the headset shell on the charger.

Make sure to place the headset case directly on top of the charger coil with the Huawei logo facing up. If charging starts, the external LED will light up, but if not, try moving the battery case until you find the correct position of the coil.

All of them can be found in the official user manual. It should be noted that wireless charging takes longer than wired charging. Despite this, Huawei still strives to do its best, saying that its technology is 50% faster than similar Apple products.

In conclusion

Huawei’s latest wireless headset combines all the advantages of AirPods, such as its simple design, which can actively eliminate noise, a better microphone, improved compatibility with Android phones, and a wireless charging case.

Every AirPods fan using an Android smartphone is very suitable for this wireless headset. But if you have an iPhone, it’s best to stay away from it, because not all features are available, but if you can bear it, this headset is still a good choice.
