Tom Clancy’s XDefiant, a free-to-play game revealed Monday, is Ubisoft’s latest foray into the Clancyverse. A team of six characters (called Defiants) will fight it out across several game modes in this first-person shooter.
There’s a lot of gunplay, but you can also harness abilities, traits, and “ultras” depending on the faction you choose.

There are some similarities between XDefiant and Ubisoft’s various Clancy franchises. There are three primary characters in the game: wolves (inspired by Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon), echelon (Splinter Cell), and outcasts and cleaners (The Division).
Ubisoft said the game will feature characters and abilities “from the Tom Clancy universe … and beyond.”
XDefant is being created by Ubisoft San Francisco’s creative team, and it features online firefights and punk rock mosh pits. As you can see, you can customize your Defiant’s weapon loadout (including primary and secondary weapons).
The game will let you adjust your setup on respawn based on what’s going on in the game. Casual and competitive players will be able to make the most of the game, too.
The Clancyverse flavor is mixed in with Overwatch and Valorant echoes. XDefiant has some obvious DNA from Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty games, as the executive producer worked on those games.
The game will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation, Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5, PC, Google Stadia, Amazon Luna, and Ubisoft Connect with full cross-play expected at launch.
Ubisoft is already inviting the public to try the game, even though it’s still in development. Register through the XDefiant website for a chance to take part in the first public PC test, which begins August 5th.
