The Asus ZenBook Pro Duo is no stranger but this is one of the most compelling and interesting laptops in years. It’s a gaming laptop, and Asus also hopes to sell it to creative professionals and hobbyists consumers because it has two screens and you can run applications on both screens at the same time.
We can’t convince professionals to buy this fat workstation, but the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo brings all kinds of unexpected benefits.
Asus slides the LCD screen under the touchpad of some of its ordinary laptops, such as the ZenBook 14. But Duo has a very large widescreen display above the keyboard-in this regard, it’s a true two-screen display.
This is an evolution of the gaming laptop. Asus’ Zephyrus and Acer Predator have a blank spot above the keyboard in order to install important graphics hardware into a smaller frame and cool. Asus did the same thing here, but all hidden under another screen.
The screen pushes the keyboard right into the lower lip to activate the palm rest. Although ASUS did its best to downplay this basic layout of the game style, Asus ZenBook Pro Duo is not.
The size and weight of this laptop are also very easy to manage. Asus’s website may dress the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo as a laptop. Architects and animators will love it, but it’s the core design for the game.
It is 24mm thick and weighs 2.5kg. It fits in a rucksack made for a 15-inch laptop. We don’t want to carry it with us every day, but you can. The most anticipated benefit of this design is how Asus ZenBook Pro Duo handles tight spaces. Not enough space to open the lid? Just flip the app to the second screen.
The main thing is an extremely high-spec 15.6-inch 4K resolution OLED panel. Few laptops have OLED screens only. TV and phone-sized panels are now mainstream. However, laptop-sized laptops are not yet available, so this is a good excuse for the sky-high price of this laptop.
When you first turn on the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo, it will look very saturated because OLED panels tend to display a wider range of colors than LCD panels. Similarly, for deep black, the illuminance is also per pixel and there is no problem with backlight bleeding, as some LCD panels experience.
The MyAsus app lets you change the color temperature, but if you want a more frosty look, you can’t change the saturation. Asus says it has customized the look of the panel based on the film industry’s DCI-P3 standard, so it’s much richer than the sRGB style most notebook makers are after.
There are several issues. If you look closely, you will see a pattern of dots on the surface. It didn’t bother us, but at such times we must remember that we not only spent £ 3000 on Asus ZenBook Pro Duo. If we do, maybe we won’t be so happy.
The 14-inch screen below matches the vertical resolution of the main screen (3840 pixels per 4K, but not high at 1100 pixels), but completely different from the characters displayed. This is an LCD with a matte surface finish that is no different from a touchpad.
Asus does provide custom widgets only for the second screen, such as the handwriting window. However, since this feature is like a second display, you can place any draggable window in it. Angle also makes the stylus feel more natural, which is important for Artsy angles.
Changing the zoom manually to 200% will also kill the lower screen UI made by Asus. Adjusting the operation of the display is the secret to the chain reaction of headaches, mainly because ASUS must create a ScreenPad Plus in the system.
Asus also equips it with some of the best components. It is equipped with an Intel Core i9-9980HK processor-an eight-core, 16-threaded beast, which has more than twice the performance of a Core i7 CPU in a regular £ 1500 laptop. This is the kind of processor you might find in a professional workstation laptop.
Its 1TB SSD reads and writes at up to 2250MB / s, and our review of the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo has 32GB RAM, which is too high for almost everyone, except those who really think a laptop is so powerful.
Asus ZenBook Pro Duo’s Nvidia GTX 2060 graphics chipset may attract more attention. This card can be played on almost any game you like on 1080p or 1440p, with all sliders set to max, while still increasing the frame rate.
Asus ZenBook Pro Duo can purchase HP Omen17 with Core i9 CPU, 32GB RAM, GTX 2080. The latter is equipped with Nvidia’s graphics chipset. The load is more powerful than Duo’s RTX 2060.
Asus ZenBook Pro Duo is not for those who wish to aggregate the original specifications into the cash spent. We still think that this is an excellent gaming laptop, and we are impressed with its cooling effect. The hinge lifts the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo slightly to create a little airflow channel. This laptop has almost no sound when performing lighter tasks such as video streaming and online pottery.
Keyboard and Trackpad
It has standard chiclet keys instead of trying to mimic the keys of a mechanical keyboard. Their travel, chunky response, and general feeling were great.
This is a simple plastic wedge with fake leather on the top. It won’t plug into the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo, but as long as you can use the flat surface of your laptop, its typing experience will be more familiar and comfortable. However, you cannot at least use the remaining knee successfully.
The keyboard also has 3 levels of backlight and many useful shortcut keys. You can turn the ScreenPad Plus display on and off and change the fan behavior with a single tap.
The surface is textured glass, and the surface feel matches the best touchpad available. This is a relatively small rectangle on the right side of the keyboard, but as long as you just browse or write a document, it will be much more intuitive than expected. It’s a bit small for photo or image editing.
There is also a special additional feature: press the calculator button to the upper right corner, and the touchpad will turn into a numeric keypad. That’s right, the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo actually has three screens.
Battery Life and Speakers
The battery life is 71Wh and looks generous in thin and light notebooks, ZenBookPro Duo can last more than 3 hours of lighting work. The duo is designed to improve performance, not to hang around in an Excel spreadsheet or Word document all day. The power adapter is big and heavy, just like every powerful laptop.
The ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo‘s speakers also impressed us. They may be accompanied by Harman Kardon’s name, but their depth, volume, and tone are just shrugs.
There are two USB 3.1, a full-size HDMI, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a Thunderbolt 3 USB-C. We thought that some creative professionals would like the memory card slot, but then many of them used MacBooks.
The 4K OLED screen of the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo is excellent, the keyboard is as good as the keyboard in a laptop, the trackpad is almost confusing, and we will never reject the RTX 2060 graphics card.
ScreenPad Plus even fascinated us and was more attractive than the second-screen model that Asus slipped on some of the other models’ touchpads.
The second screen feature to see what it actually does, and often begins to crack at the seams. It’s a pity that when it is good, it is really usable.
