After announcing the Android 11 roadmap for devices including the original Xperia 1 and 5, Sony has now officially released OS upgrades for these two devices.
The release is actually one month ahead of the original plan, because the original roadmap shows “February 2021”, because we can expect to see both Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 equipped with Android 11. To say the least, the operating system was updated soon after Xperia 1 II.
Multiple reports from owners of Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 confirm that the latest operating system version has now begun to be promoted globally on the /r/SonyXperia subreddit.
Given that this is a full upgrade, the size of the OTA file is far more than 1GB, and the December 2020 security patch has been brought. Fortunately, they all have the same firmware version 55.2.A.0.630, which means they all contain a lot of the same data.
Unfortunately, there is no changelog for Xperia 1 and 5 owners to upgrade to Android 11. However, you should have access to all the major changes seen as part of the “core” Android 11 build seen on Pixel hardware, especially considering that Sony’s own UI skins are so humble compared to other brands.
If you do own a Sony Xperia 1 or Xperia 5, you should be able to pull out the Android 11 update by going to the device’s “Settings”> “System Update” panel. From here, the refresh should show the option to download the latest OTA. However, it is not yet clear about the scope of the global update. Like most deployments, it is hoped that this update will be more widely used in the coming weeks.
